How to remove background for passport photo

A short guide to get a compliant passport or ID photo using our free background remover.

1. Take or choose your photo

Use a clear headshot with your face centered, neutral expression, and good lighting. Avoid shadows and busy backgrounds—a plain wall is ideal. Many countries require a neutral or white background, which is exactly what you get after removing the background.

2. Remove the background

Open our free background remover and upload your photo. The tool runs in your browser, so your image never leaves your device. Wait a few seconds and you’ll get a PNG with a transparent background. You can then place this on a white or colored background as required.

3. Check size and format

Passport and ID photo rules vary by country. Common requirements include a specific size in pixels or millimetres (e.g. 35×45 mm), head size within the frame, and a white or light grey background. Use our resize tool to match the required dimensions after removing the background.

4. Download and use

Download your image as PNG. If the authority asks for JPEG or a specific background color, open the image in any editor, add the background, and export in the required format. Always double-check your country’s official photo guidelines before submitting.
